Hunter Reynolds opened the high school golf season with a dramatic win on the second sudden-death playoff hole Friday and claimed the Daviess County Invitational title.

Reynolds closed strong on a hot day at Ben Hawes State Park in Owensboro. Overcoming a slow pace of play, the Trigg County High School senior trailed by two shots with two holes to play.

Reynolds birdied the final two holes and joined a playoff with Marshall County’s David Morris after they both carded 2-under par 69s. The two golfers replayed hole number one where Reynolds found trouble off the tee but rebounded well on a second shot that earned him a par. That matched Morris’ score.

The two golfers replayed the hole a second time. Both golfers found the green in regulation, but after both missed their first putts, Reynolds was able to putt in for par while Morris missed the equalizer.

For Reynolds, it’s the second straight year he has opened the season with a win. He claimed the individual title at the Hopkinsville Invitational last year.

After shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine, Reynolds shot a two-under 33 on the back. Daviess County‘s Grant Broughton, who held the lead after 16 holes, finished his round with a bogey and a par and was one shot back in third place with a 1-under 70.

Marshall County’s Trey Wall and Christian County’s Landon Hunt tied for fourth place with a 2-over 73.

Ty Butts claimed a 15th-place finish with a round of 78. Haydon Reynolds shot an 89.  Trevor Terrell, who hadn’t played in an 18-hole tournament in over two years, shot a 97. Ethan Curling, who had never played an 18-round tournament at the high school level, shot a 112.

As a team, Trigg County at 333 points which was good for sixth place. Marshall County won the team title with 299 points.
