For only the second time in the 27-year history of the Trigg County fastpitch softball program, the school has hired someone with previous head coaching experience as head coach.

Monty Todd was announced by the school as the next Lady Wildcat softball coach Tuesday.

Todd guided Livingston to a 5th District championship and a 20-12-1 record in 2022. However, he said the expense of driving from his home in Dawson Springs to Smithland every day got to be too much and led to his decision to leave the Lady Cardinal program.

Todd compiled a record of 69-32 in three seasons as head coach of Lyon County from 2015-17, which included consecutive district titles in 2016 and 2017 and an All-A Classic region title in 2016.

He served as an assistant coach at Dawson Springs High School from 2003-11 and as an assistant at Webster County in 2018.

Todd has also been a travel ball head coach for 24 years with four state titles and over three-dozen players that he coached that went on to play college softball.

The school also announced that Caldwell County native Kerry Oliver will join Todd’s staff as an assistant coach. Todd added another assistant coach could be named soon.

Todd replaces Ashley Denfip, who led Trigg County to a 17-30 record in two seasons as head coach. The Lady Wildcats lost in the semifinals of the 5th District tournament each of the two seasons.

Trigg County’s 2022 roster had 14 players that were sophomores or younger.

Trigg County has never won a district title since the state moved to fastpitch softball in 1995.  Trigg won slow pitch titles in 1992 and 1994 but was slow to develop competitive pitching once the switch was made.

Trigg didn’t win a game in the district tournament until 2016. However, the program is up and coming with 51 percent of its total wins coming in the last six seasons under Denfip and Toree McMain.

Hall of Fame Coach Jim Perrin is the only other person with previous head coaching experience to lead the Lady Wildcat program. As athletic director, he was 4-15 in 2009 before handing the reins to Lacey Briscoe.

Here is part of an interview with Monty Todd about taking the Lady Wildcat softball job.

The full interview can be heard Saturday at 8:15 am on ‘YourSportsEdge Saturday’ on WKDZ 106.5 FM and online at wkdzradio.com.
