For the second straight week the Caldwell County Tiger football team played a stiff scrimmage opponent, facing the Class 5A Owensboro High School Red Devils Thursday night in Owensboro.

The Red Devils took the varsity portion of the scrimmage 42-0 but Caldwell head coach Will Barnes said his team was improved over its first scrimmage at Owensboro Catholic last week.

“We played better, even though the score doesn’t show it,” he noted. “But Owensboro is as good a team as we’ve seen in five or six years, especially defensively. They’re really big up front, they’re physical and they’re fast. They are going to be in the mix in 5A again this season.”

The Red Devils reached the state semifinals a year ago, going 12-2.

“I thought we held up OK on the offensive line, especially since we had to plug in some guys that have never played varsity before. And we did a better job on defense, getting to the football and making plays.

“I really thought Jamus (Carneyhan) did a good job tonight on both sides of the football, and Zavy (Bumphus) played much better on defense.

“Again, the score doesn’t show it, but we played better than last week.”

Next up for the Tigers is the regular season opener next Friday, Aug. 19, against the Christian County Colonels at the Stadium of Champions in Hopkinsville.
