Rich Scangarello sees future UK success for Kaiya Sheron and Deuce Hogan

If Will Levis is healthy and the game has not been decided, he’s going to be the Kentucky quarterback. No doubt about that.

But what if something happens to Levis? Will Kentucky turn to redshirt freshman Kaiya Sheron of Somerset or Iowa transfer Deuce Hogan?

Offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello doesn’t know or if he does he is not saying but I tend to believe him when he says it remains a “good battle” for the second spot that some thought Beau Allen might win before he transferred earlier this month.

Scangarello says one day one quarterback is better and then the next day the other one might be better.

“They have done a nice job. They have gotten opportunities and a lot of reps,” the UK offensive coordinator said. “We have provided a chance for them to show they can play and they have done that.”

“Until you take that red jersey off and play for real, you  never know (who is the best). But if they have to play, I feel comfortable with either one.”

Scangarello doesn’t expect to have a clear No. 2 quarterback any time soon. Instead, he wants them to continue to compete even when the season starts next week. He says there will be a No. 2 “who is ready to go” on game day but overall it could be a while before he is sure who the best backup would be.

“It has been close. They have both done good things,” Scangarello said. “They have both done things they need to improve.”

But here is the best news that Scangarello shared Tuesday about Sheron and Hogan.

“I have liked what I have seen,” Scangarello said. “I do see futures for each of those guys in this program being really good quarterbacks.”
