One of the complaints of today’s high school coaches is the difficulty of building quality depth within their program. Student-athletes willing to remain positive and work hard regardless of playing time or the team’s fortune are becoming a scarce commodity.

Enter Trigg County senior Aydan Joiner. He is a member of both the baseball and golf teams for the Wildcats, and while he doesn’t play a starring role, he remains a valuable piece of each program as a leader and true student-athlete.

While his dedication on the diamond and golf course is to be admired, his performance in the classroom and extracurricular pursuits are also exemplary. Aydan says he doesn’t have a favorite subject, so it appears he just decided to do well in all of them. He has a 28 on the ACT and carries a 4.0 GPA while taking dual-credit classes. In addition, he says balancing sports and school work has taught him how to budget his time effectively.

That skill comes in very handy when you stay as busy as Aydan. He’s a member of the National Honors Society and serves as the Vice President of Beta, while also participating in Youth Leadership, Sources of Strength, Thoroughbred Academy, and Teen Court.

Aydan has excelled in DECA, a program whose mission statement is to provide “the skills and experience needed to propel yourself from the classroom to the board room.” In 2020, he was named Vice President of Finance and earned 1st-Place at the Region Event and 2nd-Place at the State Event in Principals of Finance. In addition, as a junior, Aydan won 1st-Place in the Regional Business Law and Ethics Event and took the top spot at the State Accounting Applications Event.

Aydan’s first three years at Trigg County High School all led to the opportunity to attend the Governor’s Scholar Program last summer. He called it an “amazing experience” and feels he made relationships with people his age from all over the state that will “last forever.”

As you might guess from his DECA awards, Aydan plans to major in Finance at the University of Kentucky with an eye toward attending law school.
