It was a battle that came down to the final minutes. Todd County Central used a big second half scoring drive to fend off a Fort Campbell rally as the Rebels earned a hard fought 33-26 win over the Falcons Friday night in Elkton.

Early on it looked as if the two teams would test the scoreboard’s lights. The Falcons took the opening drive and went 80 yards, scoring on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Darin Frederick to Jontae Al-Muid to take an early 8-0 lead.

Unlike last week against Trigg County, where the Rebels dug themselves an early big hole, Todd County Central responded quickly to the early Fort Campbell touchdown. The Rebels drove 59 yards in 8 plays, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Gavyn Nolan to Devin Schutt. After the two-point conversion the game was tied at 8-8.

Fort Campbell took just three plays to find the end zone again, thanks in large part to a big personal foul call on the Rebels. This time it was Frederick to Jayden Swann for a 17-yard score making it 14-8.

Aided by four Falcon penalties, the Rebels marched right back down the field and scored on a six-yard run from Ricky Woodard and, with the two-point conversion, took a 16-14 lead.

After stopping the Falcons for the first time on the next possession, Todd Central scored on their third straight possession. Gavyn Nolan rambled for 21 yards and moved the Rebel lead out to 24-14 with still 9:39 to go in the half.

Things quieted down for a little bit until late in the half. Just as it appeared the Rebels were going to find the end zone again, the Falcons came up with a big pick. However, the Falcons gave the ball right back on an interception of their own. And, in turn, gave Todd Central a big momentum swing to take into the half.

A Nate Reding 32-yard field goal at the first half horn gave the Rebels a 27-14 halftime lead and it appeared all of the momentum going into the break. Figure in that Todd Central would get the second-half kickoff and it looked as if the Fort Campbell Falcons were on the brink and about to get pushed over the edge.

However, this bunch of Falcons is willing to put up a fight. After stopping Todd Central on the opening drive of the second half, Fort Campbell struck quickly. Darin Frederick hooked up with Amari Waddy for a 55-yard score to trim the lead to 27-20.

Thanks to a bad snap and a sack, the Falcons stopped the Rebels again on the next possession. And again, the Falcons struck paydirt. It was Frederick to Waddy again, but this time it wasn’t supposed to be as Waddy caught a deflection for a 12-yard score to make it a one-point game at 27-26 with 2:13 to go in the third.

Led by the rushing attack of Jemarion Smith and Ricky Woodward, the Rebels then responded with the drive of the night. Todd Central marched the ball down the field, using 13 plays to cover 56 yards, and taking up 6:38 of the game over the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth. Smith finished it off with a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:35 to go to extend the lead back out to 33-26.

The Rebels would stop the Falcons one more time and then eat up the final 5:10 of the game to seal the win.

Todd Central improves to 1-1 with the win. The Rebels will hit the road Thursday night when they travel to Dixon to take on Webster County.

Fort Campbell has their bye week next week and will be at Trigg County on September 9.
