In a volleyball contest with two closely matched teams, you can’t afford to give away points. However, Trigg County fell into that trap Thursday as they dropped a four-set match to Fulton City in the first-ever matchup between the schools.

Fulton City won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-12. Trigg took the third set 25-17 before the Bulldogs closed out the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.

Exactly half the points scored by Fulton City in the match — 92 — came from Lady Wildcat errors. Trigg had difficulty on the offensive end with 19 set errors and 16 attack errors in the match.

Up 13-10 in the first set, Fulton City used a 6-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage. Trigg would get no closer than seven points.

Fulton City never trailed in the second set. Eight set errors and four service errors proved to be too much to overcome for Trigg County.

The Lady Wildcats eliminated the errors in the third set and used a strong service game from Lilian McKelvey during a 7-0 run that broke a 10-10 tie. Mckelvey had three of her five aces during the decisive run. Trigg only had a total of five errors in the set and had the momentum heading into the fourth set.

The set was tied four times before Fulton City used a 10-0 run to take control of the set and eventually the match.

McKelvey had four kills in the match in addition to her five aces. Keagan Greenwood added three aces and three kills, and Ava Scheer had six kills. Carmen Boyd had two kills, two assists, and eight digs, while Abigail Johnson had an ace and 13 digs.

Trigg County (0-20) will play at Metcalfe County Saturday before returning home for a Monday match with Hopkinsville.
