Cathryn Brown Advances to Bowling Green for One Final Walk

Cathryn Brown will play her final rounds of high school golf next week at the golf course that holds a special place for her.

The Lyon County High School senior shot a one over par 73 Tuesday at the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac KHSAA state golf first round in Owensboro. Brown finished one shot behind Region One winner Trinity Beth of Marshall County who carded an even-par 72.

Brown began her day on the back nine where she birdied two of her first five holes to move to two-under par. But a bogey on 15 and a double bogey on 16 moved her to one over. She bounced back with birdies on holes number three and four and despite two bogeys, was able to shoot an even-par 36 on the front nine.

This year marks the first for the new qualifying standard for the state golf tournament. In the past, Brown needed to be just one of the top seven finishers at the region tourney to advance to state. However this year, the top 10 finishers at region advance to the first round. From there, the top 15 golfers advance to the final round in Bowling Green.

For Brown, it will be her fourth appearance at the state tournament where she has never finished worse than 12th place. Last year she finished in third place.

The course is the same one where her older brother Cullan won the boys’ state title in 2016. After two straight top 10 finishes, she would like to join her late brother as a state champion on the same course. Brown will begin that quest on Friday, October 7.
