The Christian County Colonels failed to find the endzone for the second time in three weeks on Thursday, falling 42-0 to visiting Greenwood in both teams’ district opener.

The victory is the Gators’ sixth straight, leaving them at 6-1 ahead of a matchup with Bowling Green in two weeks.

Any momentum the Colonels carried into Thursday from last week’s 34-20 win over Murray evaporated with a pair of Greenwood touchdowns in the 1st quarter.

Tel Tel Long scored the first on a 15-yard run, and the Gators added a 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with just four minutes played.  They added the second on a 3-yard plunge by Lofton Howard and were in front 14-0 after the 1st quarter.

After a nice gain on a pass from Jordan Miles to Elijah Underhill, the Colonels were in business at the Greenwood 18-yard line early in the 2nd quarter.  However, they went backward and had to settle for a 42-yard field goal attempt that fell short.

Greenwood made the Colonels pay immediately, with Andrew Hatcher taking a pass from Ryan Huff and going 80-yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.  After another scoring run by Howard, the Gators were back in scoring position as the seconds ticked down toward halftime.  But a Christian County sack ended the half and denied a TD that would have triggered a running clock.

The Colonels kept the Gators at bay for the first nine minutes of the 2nd half, but a 22-yard TD run by Elmo Stewart made it 36-0 and kept the clock moving the rest of the way.

Christian County had one more opportunity to get on the scoreboard, but Miles’ pass on 3rd and 6 from the Greenwood 35 was picked off to end the threat.

The Gators added the final touchdown on a short run with just over three minutes left for the final margin.

The Colonels managed only five 1st downs and 83 yards of offense, including only five yards rushing on 20 attempts.  Underhill finished with three catches for 47 yards.

The Gators racked up 18 1st downs and 373 yards of offense.  Huff was 10/18 through the air for 168 yards, Stewart ran for 62 yards, Howard for 47, and Long finished with 40.

Christian County slips to 2-5 and has two weeks before they head to South Warren on October 14.
