Light Outage Stops 7th District Boys’ Soccer Semifinal

Sparks flew both figuratively and literally Monday night in the boys’ 7th District soccer semifinals in Princeton.

After a spirited first half that saw Caldwell County and Hopkins County Central head to halftime still 0-0, a control box for lights on the Butler building side of Butler Stadium caught fire, sending sparks flying.

Initially, only the lights on that side of the field went out. But with the sparks continuing to shoot out of the box and smoke rolling up the pole, a transformer at the stadium blew, leaving the field in total darkness.

The teams hoped to be able to complete the match on Tuesday, if referees were available. But no makeup plans have been finalized.

Hopkins Central outshot Caldwell 4-3 in the first half.

The Tigers won the regular-season matchup between the two teams 2-0.
