Caldwell County’s girls defeated University Heights Academy twice during the season, but a strong second half allowed the Lady Blazers to reverse those fortunes in the postseason.

UHA scored twice in the final 12 minutes to upend Caldwell 3-1 Monday night in the first round of the 2nd Region soccer tournament at the Stadium of Champions in Hopkinsville.

The Lady Tigers beat University 3-1 early in the season in the 2nd Region All A Classic, then edged UHA 1-0 during the regular season.

But the Lady Tigers could never get the lead in the regional tournament meeting.

UHA broke the ice in the 14th minute when Emma Dill’s shot inside the box eluded Caldwell goalkeeper Rachel McClung and found its way into the net.

Caldwell countered 5 minutes later when Cali Traylor knocked home a penalty kick. That came after University Heights was called for a handball in the box.

Both teams had other chances in the first half, but went to the break still tied 1-1.

But UHA held the upper hand for most of the second half, holding an 11-5 advantage in shots in the final 40 minutes.

The Lady Blazers finally took advantage in the 69th minute to go up 2-1. A corner pass from Skylar Cantrell was headed home from right in front by Audrey Grise to give UHA the lead.

The Lady Blazers added another goal on a penalty kick in the 77th minute to put the game away. That came after McClung made a save but officials ruled she pushed a UHA player. Audrey Perry converted the PK to extend the margin to 3-1.

McClung finished the game with seven saves.

Lucy Wilkins recorded five stops for the Lady Blazers.

UHA outshot Caldwell 20-10 in the contest.

The Lady Tigers see their season end with a record of 12-6-3.

University Heights, now 10-6-1, will next face Trigg County in Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinals. The Lady Wildcats (15-2-1) routed Union County 10-0 in their first round matchup.
