Henderson County or Madisonville has appeared in every girls’ region championship match since realignment in 2012. And one or the other has won the region title.

The two long-time rivals met again Tuesday in another classic that was decided by penalty kicks where Henderson won the round 4-2 and won the match 6-5 to advance to Thursday’s championship match. The Lady Colonels will face Trigg County, who beat University Heights 3-1 in the other semifinal.

Henderson wasted little time getting things going as Ashton Lynum took a pass from Brooke Taylor and scored three minutes into the contest.

The defenses would have their way until the 30-minute mark when a foul sent Madisonville’s Lillie Carman to the penalty kick line where she drilled home the equalizer.

As they did all night, Henderson had the answer. Kacee Butler scored unassisted less than a minute later to put Henderson back up 2-1.

Two minutes later, Madison Hill tied the game with a goal from out front. The 2-2 score would remain at halftime.

Madisonville scored quickly in the second half. Ella Knight headed in a corner kick in the 42nd minute for a 3-2 Lady Maroon lead. A minute later, Taylor Dunn notched the equalizer for Henderson County.

The Lady Maroons again took the lead in the 54th minute when Hill scored off a corner kick.

After Taylor scored her second goal of the game, Madisonville took the lead with 11 minutes left on Carman’s second PK conversion of the contest.

Again, Henderson had the answer as Butler’s second goal of the game tied things up with seven minutes left.

Tied 5-5 at the end of regulation, the teams didn’t score in the two overtime periods. That meant a penalty kick round would decide the outcome between the teams for the third time in nine years.

Madisonville and Henderson County both scored on their first kicks. Henderson County’s Chloe Honeycutt made a diving save while Lynum scored to put Henderson up 2-1. Madisonville’s third penalty kick hit the top of the crossbar and failed to go in.

Henderson’s Marley Collins and Lila Hall made their shots to give the Lady Colonels to 4-2 win in the PK round and a 6-5 win on the scoreboard.

Madisonville, who lost to Henderson County 6-4 in last year’s region championship, sees its season end with a 10-9-1 record.

Henderson County, 15-6-1, has won its two career meetings with Trigg County by the mercy rule. Their last matchup came in 2018.

Thursday’s championship match will be at 6:30.
