Boyle County sophomore Montavin Quisenberry got invited to Lexington to watch Kentucky beat Mississippi State 27-17 Saturday night by the UK coaching staff.

Obviously, the trip went well because on Sunday he got a scholarship offer from Kentucky recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow.

“When he went to the game, that let them actually see him in person,” said Boyle coach Justin Haddix. “Because he’s a sophomore, they can’t call him but he can call them. They called me Sunday and got with him and we called coach Marrow and he offered him a scholarship.”

The 5-10, 170-pound Quisenberry is a special talent. He has 46 rushes for 455 yards — 10 yards per carry — and five touchdowns. He also has 36 catches for 455 yards — 13 yards per catch — and eight more scores.

Quisenberry also has a punt return for a score, a kickoff return for a score and touchdown pass of 66 yards.

If that’s not enough, one defense he has 22 tackles, three tackles for loss and three interceptions in Boyle’s eight games.

“(Kentucky assistant coach) Mike Stoops was at our Lexington Catholic game and talked about him,” Haddix said. “He can do a lot of things with the ball in his hands. We move him all over the field to get the ball to him.”

“On defense, he can play a lot of positions, too, and I think he could play defense in college. He can play corner, nickel back or safety. He can play press coverage and he has great instincts for the ball.”

Haddix knows it is a lofty comparison but says he is a lot like former UK star Wan’Dale Robinson of Western Hills, who caught his first NFL touchdown pass in his rookie season Sunday.

“He can take a hit just like Wan’Dale could. It’s hard to get a clean shot on him because he’s so elusive but if he takes a hit, he just comes right back,” Haddix said.

Quisenberry transferred to Boyle from Garrard County this year. As a freshman quarterback at Garrard, he completed 90 of 130 passes for 1,034 yards and 10 scores and ran 162 times for 1,501 yards and 19 scores. That means he’s already accounted for 45 touchdowns and over 3,400 all-purpose yards.

Haddix thinks the best is still to come for Quisenberry, who also has offers from Louisville and Eastern Kentucky.

“Getting in the weight room with our group will help him. We were not able to work out with him because he didn’t get cleared until about July 10,” Haddix said. “He’s not been able to spend a lot of time in the weight room with us yet. He’s built well and I know he will be able to add weight and muscle.”

Quisenberry has been time in 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash and the Boyle coach says that time will improve as he gets stronger.

“He is a great kid, too. He’s always wanting to learn and listening to everything you say,” Haddix said. “He puts his time in working. He’s great in practice. He’s not somebody you have to motivate because he wants to be better.”

“He’s going to be hearing from a lot more coaches. He’s going to have a lot of options in the future because he’s a special, special player.”
