Lady Blazers Advance With 4th Win Over Caldwell

University Heights Academy didn’t have to look far for a scouting report on its first round opponent in the 2nd Region volleyball tournament.

The Lady Blazers faced Caldwell County for the fourth time this season — and finished off a season sweep of the Lady Tigers 3-0 Tuesday night in Henderson.

UHA (26-12) advanced by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-17 and will next face host and defending champion Henderson County in the semifinals Wednesday night.

The Lady Colonels (27-10) dispatched Livingston Central in straight sets in Tuesday’s late match, 25-6, 25-15, 25-15.

Julia Thomas had 16 kills and four blocks to pace the Lady Blazers against Caldwell. Claire Chewning added five kills and a block.

University Heights scored the first seven points of the night on the way to the 25-14 win in the first set.

The Lady Blazers hit a bit of a bump in the second set when Caldwell built a 12-8 lead. The Lady Tigers were still up 14-13, but UHA scored the final 12 points of the set to build a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Blazers then built another 7-0 lead in the third set on the way to finishing off the victory.

Suzie Comperry had two kills, three blocks and five digs for University Heights in the win. Sarah Peebles tallied 22 assists and seven digs.

Chayse Ann Gilliland had two kills and six digs. Olivia Oakley recorded a kill and 10 digs while Evelyn Cotthoff added seven digs, Emily Noland three digs and Lainey Walker two digs.

Caldwell, which finishes the season 13-19, got six kills and 14 digs from Lily Hoard. Rylee Thompson recorded three kills and eight digs.

Brylee Butts and Katie Menser each had two kills and a block while Ellie Ramey had two kills and four digs.

Kyndra Winters finished with 14 assists and five digs while Claire Knoth had a kill and nine digs.
Benashka Thomas had three digs and a block. T.J. Goodwin added three digs.

Caldwell had never lost to UHA before this season, going 16-0 before the Lady Blazers won all four meetings in 2022.

Wednesday’s semifinals will open with Madisonville-North Hopkins (27-10) facing Crittenden County (19-14) at 6:00, followed by UHA and Henderson.

The regional championship match is set for Thursday night.
