With both teams missing offensive centerpieces in Thursday night’s 5A playoff opener, the Owensboro Red Devils didn’t miss a beat without their star running back, while the Christian County Colonels struggled in the absence of junior quarterback Jordan Miles.

Kenyatta Carbon racked up over 1,100 yards and 21 touchdowns during the regular season, but with him out due to injury, the Red Devils posted five 1st-quarter TDs on the way to a 54-16 victory. Owensboro won its seventh straight game to improve to 9-2 and advance to face the winner of Friday’s matchup between Greenwood and Grayson County.

Christian County enjoyed a bright start, with Cyrus Greenwade picking off a pass to give the Colonels the ball on their own 20-yard line. Then, on their first offensive play of the game, Deameion Leavell hit Elijah Underhill for an 80-yard touchdown, but the play came back for a penalty.

It was all downhill from there for the Colonels, beginning with a 41-yard TD run by Owensboro’s Deion Winstead. A 33-yard pass from Kasey Boone to Khalil Rogers made it 14-0, and the Red Devils were back in the end zone less than 30 seconds later on a pick-six by Javion Robinson.

After a 20-yard TD pass from Boone to Ethan Pendleton, the Red Devils made it 35-0 on a 15-yard scoring run by Evan Hampton to close the 1st quarter.

The Colonels looked set to get on the scoreboard after a pass to Underhill down to the Owensboro 1-yard line to start the 2nd quarter, but a fumble on 1st and goal gave the ball back to the Red Devils.

A 12-yard TD pass from Boone to Ethan Pendleton triggered the running clock with 5:27 left in the half, and Winstead gashed the Colonels for a 47-yard run to send the Red Devils to the locker room with a 48-0 advantage.

After Christian County’s Dahzmeon Brown blocked a field goal attempt on Owensboro’s first drive of the 2nd half, the Colonels once again found the end zone on a long pass from Leavell to Underhill. This time the play stood, and the score was 48-8 after Christian County added the 2-point conversion on a one-handed grab by JaSean Riley.

Owensboro scored for the last time with 7:26 left to play, and the Colonels answered with an 83-yard kickoff return by Prince Northington II for the game’s final points.

Winstead had a massive night for the Red Devils with 191 rushing yards and two TDs, and Hampton added 41 yards and a score.

Boone and Trevor Delacey combined to throw for 187 yards and four scores, giving Owensboro 419 yards of total offense.

Leavell completed seven passes for 160 yards and a touchdown for the Colonels. However, Christian County rushed for -40 yards and was penalized nine times for 71 yards.

Underhill finished with three catches for 105 yards and a TD, and Riley caught two passes for 33 yards.

The Colonels end the season at 2-9, failing to advance in the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
