It’s been four seasons since the Todd County Central girls’ basketball team reached the 4th-Region tournament and almost a decade since the program’s last 13th-District title.  But with a new face on the sidelines and a blend of talented youngsters and experienced returnees, the Lady Rebels are looking for a return to postseason success in 2022-23.

First-year head coach Nick Suttle inherits a team coming off an 8-16 campaign, including a 65-48 loss to Franklin-Simpson in the first round of the district tournament.

The Lady Rebels lost three seniors off that squad, but the absence of that team’s leading rebounder may leave the biggest hole.  Lucy Chester pulled down almost ten boards a game to go with just over eight points per contest, but she opted not to return for her senior season.

Sophomore Alexis Taylor led the team in scoring as a freshman with 11 points per game.  She also averaged a shade under eight rebounds and shot almost 50% from the field.

One player who benefits from Taylor’s presence in the paint is junior guard Abby Williams.  Williams was tied for first on the team with 17 made three-pointers last year, averaging 10.5 points and five rebounds.

Senior Jamaia Coleman also knocked down 17 threes last year, finishing fourth on the team in scoring with seven points per game and chipping in almost three rebounds per contest.

Point guard Ciara Collins also provides experience and leadership after being the primary ball handler last season.  Collins figures to be joined in the backcourt by freshman Ja’Mya Kay.  Kay averaged six points and almost four rebounds in only three games last year when a knee injury cut her season short.  Coach Suttle says she excels in the open floor and can be a lockdown defender for the Lady Rebels.

Suttle also expects freshmen Daymea Garrett and Leah Glenn to help out with their ability to shoot from the outside, and feels 7th-grader Jordyn Shemwell will make an impact on the defensive end as well as getting to the rim.

The Lady Rebels are set to open the season with a visit from Trigg County on Monday, before hosting Montgomery Central, TN on Tuesday.

Todd Central will end 2022 at the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic and open district play early in 2023 with a matchup at Franklin-Simpson.

4th-Region All-A play begins with a meeting with Metcalfe County on January 16.  The Lady Rebels fell to Cumberland County in the opening round last season.
