After being doubled up in the first quarter by visiting Warren Central on Monday, the Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team found its footing over the remainder of the game but couldn’t avoid a 60-47 opening-night loss to the Lady Dragons.

Hopkinsville lost its opener for the second straight year after winning six straight dating back to the 2015-16 season.

The Lady Tigers led 9-5 early on after a three-pointer and a layup by Kahtahvia Fleming, but Warren Central’s Aida Akhmedova took over with the last ten points of the quarter for an 18-9 Lady Dragon advantage.

Despite five points in the second quarter for Shiyah Forte, Hoptown trailed by as many as 14 and were on the wrong end of a 30-18 score at halftime.

With Warren Central threatening to blow the game open at 40-24 with just under three minutes left in the third, the Lady Tigers got three points from Forte, a three-point play by Ma’Kaya Payton, and a pair of free throws by Faith Dansbury to cut the margin to eight.

Two more free throws by Dansbury pulled Hoptown to within single digits at 44-35 with a minute played in the final frame.  However, Jordyn Downey put up five points in a row, and Akhmedova scored the last of her game-high 16 points to shut the door.

The Lady Tigers will be back on their home floor on Tuesday for a visit from Madisonville-North Hopkins.  The Lady Maroons have won five straight in the series dating back to 2019.
