Lady Rebels Open Season by Downing Trigg

In a matchup featuring new coaches for their respective schools, Todd County Central gave Nick Suttle his first win as Lady Rebel coach as they handed Trigg County a 53-39 loss Monday at Rebel Gym.

For Trigg County, it was a loss in the first of six straight road games to start the season for Coach Greg Stephens.

Todd County Central was able to overcome an off-shooting night and take command of the contest midway through the opening quarter.

Olivia Noffsinger hit a 3-pointer from the wing that gave the Lady Wildcats a 3-2 lead two minutes into the contest. It would be the last time the Lady Wildcats held the lead.

Todd Central answered with 10 straight points, keeping Trigg off the scoreboard for almost eight minutes.

Ciera Collins scored seven of her 12 points in the second quarter as the Lady Rebels extended their lead to 17-6 at the 3:17 mark. Noffsinger buried a 3-pointer and Landi Rogers added a bucket and a free throw as Trigg cut into the Todd lead.

Evonna McGee’s 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half drew the Lady Wildcats to within six points by halftime.

Trigg tried cutting into Todd’s lead in the third quarter but Jamia Burks scored four straight points to keep the Lady Wildcats at bay.

Trigg would get no closer than 10 points in the fourth quarter as Todd Central hit 10 of 18 free throws in the final frame. Todd hit 13 of 30 for the game. Trigg was 2 of 12 at the free throw line and missed its only second half attempt.

It was a woeful shooting night for the Lady Wildcats across the board as Trigg County made only 15 of 53 shots for 28 percent and connected on just 7 of 31 shots from behind the arc.

Todd Central also launched 53 shots and made three more field goals than Trigg.

The Lady Rebels were active on the glass, outrebounding Trigg 43-33 which included 19 offensive rebounds and 14 second-chance points.

Abby Williams and Alexis Taylor both had double-digit rebounds. Williams had 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Taylor had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jamya Kay, who missed nearly all of last season with a knee injury, had 11 points and seven rebounds in her return to the court.

Noffsinger scored 13 points and moved past Janay McGill Futrell (1,013) and Janada Acree (1,022) into 13th on Trigg County’s all-time scoring list with 1,024 points.

Kara Hyde added 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Lady Rebels denied Trigg County its first chance for consecutive wins over Todd Central since 1986. Todd Central leads the all-time series with Trigg 35-5.

Todd Central will host Montgomery Central, Tenn. Tuesday while Trigg County travels to Murray Thursday.
