Down through the years, there have not been all that many meetings on the basketball court between the Lyon County Lady Lyons and the Marshall County Lady Marshals. And, when they did meet, things did not usually go very well at all for the Lady Lyons.

In fact, since 2000, the teams had met just four times going into Thursday night, with Lyon County coming no closer than 13 points in those four games.

History changed Thursday night.

The Lady Lyons used a big third quarter to take the lead for good and then held on for dear life coming down the stretch of the game to take their first win over the Lady Marshals 51-48 in the final game of the first day of the 2022 Marshall County Hoopfest.

Coming out of a 22-22 halftime tie, Lyon County went on a sizzling hot run in the third quarter to lead by as many as 13 points. Lexi Holland and Piper Cotham combined to score 15 points during the big run that put the Lady Lyons up. The quarter would end with Lyon County holding a 42-30 lead.

Lyon County would extend the lead to 14 points early in the final quarter, then the Lady Marshals made their move to try and salvage the win and the youthfulness of the Lady Lyons for the first time all night showed up just a bit. With the Lady Lyons having some turnover issues and missing six free throws over the final eight minutes, Marshall County came storming back.

With the lead at 44-30, Marshall County used a 18-6 run to pull within two points at 50-48 with 48.9 seconds to go. After Courtney Collins made one of two free throws, Marshall County would find themselves with a chance to tie the game.

The final chance for the Lady Marshals came with 5.8 seconds to go as they inbounded the ball under their own basket. Marshall County would get a wide open look at a three from the right corner, but the shot did not fall. The Lady Lyons pulled down the rebound as the final moments ticked off the clock and the historic win officially went into the record books.

Birthday girl Trinity Taylor celebrated her 14th birthday by leading the Lady Lyons with 12 points, all in the first half. Lilly Perry finished with 10. Lexi Holland ended up with nine points, while Piper Cotham added 8.

Laken Schroader was the top scorer for Marshall County with 16 points. Chevelle Henson was the only other Lady Marshal to reach double figures with 11.

Lyon County improves to 1-1 with the win. The Lady Lyons are back in action Friday night when they host University Heights.
