For a half, the Todd County Central Rebels appeared to have the Bowling Green Purples right where they wanted them Friday night. The Rebels had controlled the tempo and were going toe-to-toe with the Purples in a 20-18 game with Bowling Green holding tight to a two-point lead.

Then, apparently, Coach D.G. Sherrill reminded his Purples in the locker room that they had the biggest player on the court and they might want to start trying to get him the ball down in the lane. And, that was exactly what the Purples started to do.

Keyed by the play of big man Mason Ritter, Bowling Green opened the second half on a 17-1 run to gain control of the game and then held off a 4th quarter rally from the Rebels to take a 54-48 win.

As the game got underway Friday night, the Rebels worked to play hard-nosed defense and control the pace of play, and the strategy worked. Todd Central led Bowling Green 10-8 after the opening quarter.

The lead grew to four early in the second quarter at 14-10. The Rebels then had some offensive struggles and the Purples were able to use a 10-4 spurt to take a 20-18 point lead into the locker room.

Ritter then came out of the locker room and took over the game on the offensive end for Bowling Green. He scored the first five points of Bowling Green’s second-half run to quickly extend the lead to 25-18. In addition to Ritter stepping up in the third, Todd Central also had some issues with ball security, enabling the Purples to get several run-outs.

The Bowling Green lead grew to as many as 19 before the Rebels closed the third with six straight to trim the lead to 41-28.

Behind the outside shooting of Perez Whitlock and Hayden Strader, the Rebels would cut the lead to double-digits but could get no closer than the final six-point margin.

Jamison Glass led Todd Central with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hayden Strader added 12 points. Trayvon Foster also hit double-figures with 10.

Mason Ritter scored 16 for Bowling Green, 13 of them coming in the second half. Mikayelus Wardlow also had 16 for the Purples.

The loss drops the Rebels to 1-2 on the season. They will return to action Tuesday when they go on the road to take on Whitesville Trinity.

Bowling Green improves to 2-0. The Purples will be on the road for the third straight game to open the season Tuesday when they travel to take on Elizabethtown.
