Trigg Off to First 3-0 Start in Six Years

Trigg County’s continued balance scoring led them to a 79-58 win over the Caldwell County Tigers Saturday in Princeton.

The win was Trigg’s first at Caldwell County in six years and the 21-point margin the largest at the CAB since 2011.

Xavier Bumphus scored seven of Caldwell County’s first 13 points as the Tigers jumped out to a six-point lead.

Trigg’s Landon Stewart came off the Wildcat bench to score seven points in the first quarter including the final five points that got the Wildcats to within a point after the first eight minutes.

Luke Washer’s putback a minute into the second quarter gave Trigg County a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Caldwell County managed just one field goal in a three-minute stretch of the second quarter that saw Trigg County build a 32-22 lead.

The Wildcats’ 37-25 halftime lead was the largest of the first 16 minutes for the Wildcats.

Trigg County hit 9 of 15 shots in the third quarter as they used a 22-6 run to build a 30-point lead with 1:38 left.

Caldwell County got as close as 16 points in the final quarter on a Colin Whittington bucket with 3:35 left.

Trigg County hit eight 3-pointers and hit 21-of-30 shots inside the arc, while Caldwell shot 35-percent (20 of 56) from the field and was 1-of-11 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats held a 42-26 advantage on the glass which included 14 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points. However, the stats weren’t all bad for Caldwell as they forced 21 Trigg turnovers, had 15 steals, and scored 19 points off the miscues.

Stewart paced four Wildcats in double-figures with 25 points and was 4-of-6 behind the arc. Jhaden Vaughn added 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Tutu Gude scored 14 points.

Caldwell County got 16 points and eight rebounds from Bumphus and 16 points and three steals from Colin Whittington. Carter Whittington just missed scoring in double figures with nine points and added four steals.

Trigg County is off to its first 3-0 start in seven years and will host Union County Tuesday.

Caldwell County (0-2) will host Hopkinsville Tuesday.
