Al Baker to Be Inducted Into Kentucky Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame

Al Baker will be inducted into his second Hall of Fame in as many years Saturday as part of the latest class of the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Joining Baker in the induction class are athletes James Jeter of North Hardin High School and Shevan Threats of Elizabethtown as well as coaches Danny Simpson of Harrison County High School, Joy Heines of Hite Elementary School, and Alice Brutscher of Western High School.

On the track, Al was a two-time state champion in both the 100 and 200 meters and finished runner-up at state in the shot put his junior year.  His winning time of 10.7 seconds in the 100-yard dash in 1985 still remains a Class 1A state meet record.

Al was recruited nationally to play college football.  He played at the University of Kentucky where he was a second-team All-SEC selection at running back his senior year.  He was drafted by the New York Jets in the tenth round of the 1991 NFL Draft.

Al is married with three children and lives in Ashland where he is the director of cultural diversity at Ashland Community and Technical College.

He is the first Trigg County athlete inducted into the KTCCCA Hall of Fame. Former Trigg County coach George Radford was inducted in 1992 and Jim Wallace was also inducted as a coach in 1996.

Last year, Al was inducted into the KHSAA/Dawahare’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be Saturday afternoon at 3 pm at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington.
