Kentucky’s offensive line was not as good in 2022 as it had been the previous few seasons for coach Mark Stoops and the coach has made it clear that improvement has to be made for the 2023 season.

The Cats got a needed boost Thursday when three-year starting offensive lineman Kenneth Horsey said he would take his COVID season and return to UK for a sixth season.

He started 21 games at guard his sophomore and junior seasons before switching to left tackle in 2022 and starting 12 games. He could be moved back to guard for the 2023 season if UK finds a better option at tackle.

“Along with continuing to pursue my master’s degree. I am more than ready to get back to work and do my part to help this offensive line and this team reach new heights,” Horsey wrote in a statement on social media.

He’s an inspirational story as well as a productive player. He needed open heart surgery just before his high school graduation and was one of  three winners of the 2020 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award.

He was a team captain in 2022 and was a preseason third-team all-SEC selection. He made the move to left tackle after UK struggled with blocking/protection at that spot and started 11 games. Pro Football Focus graded him at 67.5 overall, 72.8 in pass protection and 62.8 in run blocking. That ranked him 170th overall among the  nation’s tackles.

Kentucky signed Northern Illinois transfer Marques Cox, a left tackle. That could leave Horsey to battle with 2022 starter Jager Burton and Alabama transfer Tanner Bowles for the starting left guard position.
