Webster County Shoots Down Trigg 75-63

Webster County hit eight 3-pointers and shot over 50-percent from the field to keep Trigg County at bay all night in a 75-63 win at Wildcat Gym Tuesday.

The Trojans hit 17-of-28 shots in the first half and shot 54-percent for the game. They were especially deft from behind the arc where they knocked down 8-of-13.

The Wildcats countered by hitting eight 3-pointers and shooting 50-percent but 21 turnovers led to 23 Webster points.

Micah and Markus Austin hit 3-pointers on Webster’s first two possessions as the Trojans kept the six-point advantage for the first quarter.

Down 32-24, Trigg used a 12-2 run to take a 36-34 lead on a bucket by Jhaden Vaughn with 1:41 left in the half.

Evan Michalek scored the final five points of the half to give the Trojans a 41-38 lead by halftime. It was part of a big night for the Trojan guard who finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting. He added six rebounds.

A Luke Washer bucket with 2:37 left in the third quarter was the last time Trigg County was as close as three points.

Webster County hit 9-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal their fourth straight win over Trigg County and eighth in the last nine meetings.

Joining Michalek in double figures for the Trojans were Deshawn Murphy with 17 points and four assists; Micah Austin with 14 points and Markus Austin with 13.

Luke Washer led Trigg County with 23 points and 10 rebounds with Vaughn adding 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Hunter Reynolds chipping in 12 points.

Trigg County, who is among the state leaders in free throw attempts at nearly 20 a game, missed six of its seven tries.

Webster County will host Livingston Central Saturday. Trigg County’s game Saturday with Clarksville Christian has been canceled. The Wildcats will return to district play next week with road games at Crittenden County Tuesday and at Lyon County on Friday, January 20.
