It appears the final season of high school athletics for Hopkinsville and Christian County will get underway with fall sports in the 2023-2024 school year, one year later than had been originally planned. With that, a date has now been set for the final football game between the two programs.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon, the Christian County Public Schools formally announced the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control approval of the district’s request for Christian County High School football to participate in Class 6A football beginning with the 2023 playing season.

The redistricting was approved earlier this week during a KHSAA Board of Control meeting.

In a news release, the district announced it had made the request, “for the move into Class 6A, to align with the consolidation of Christian County High School and Hopkinsville High School beginning in the 2024 playing season.”

Officials noted that “football contracts are two-year contracts. By Christian County High School moving to 6A for the 2023 playing season contracts can be honored for both years, while allowing teams contracted with HHS ample time to find replacement games for the 2024 season.”

While complete schedules for both teams for the 2023 season will be released at a later date, officials did announce the final football game between Christian County High School and Hopkinsville High School is now set for September 1, 2023, at 7:00 PM at the Stadium of Champions.

Originally, the 2022-2023 season had been slated to be the final season of athletics at both schools, but when the bid for the construction of Hopkinville-Christian County Academy came in significantly higher than expected, the project and the consolidation of athletics for the two schools was delayed.

While the release specifically deals with football, the announcement also means that all sports at Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy will begin competing in the fall of 2024.
