Playing without its leading scorer and rebounder, Trigg County was playing toe to toe with Lyon County midway through the opening quarter of their district game in Eddyville Friday.
Then the Lyons did what the Lyons do – their pressure defense took over and put 22 straight points on the board. The final result was an 80-38 win – their 12th straight over the Wildcats.
Lyon County turned Trigg over 12 times in the opening quarter which led to 21 points and a 31-12 lead after the first eight minutes. The Lyons, meanwhile, hit 14-of-24 shots in building their lead.
Travis Perry scored 11 of his 31 points in the opening quarter and in front of Purdue Coach Matt Painter, the latest Power 5 coach to search and find Eddyville in hopes of landing the Lyon County junior guard that currently sits in second place on Kentucky’s all-time scoring list.
Trigg County would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way despite shooting over 50-percent for most of the game. In the end, the turnovers were too much to overcome. Lyon County scored 41 points off 27 Trigg turnovers and outscored the Wildcats 50-18 in the paint.
Trigg County was playing without Jhaden Vaughn, who leads the team at 17 points and 13 rebounds a game. Vaughn rolled his ankle in Tuesday’s loss at Crittenden County and was wearing a boot on the Wildcat bench.
Aside from his 31 points, Perry had seven steals and six assists while shooting 13-of-18 from the field.
Brady Shoulders added 21 points and nine rebounds, and Jack Reddick chipped in with 18 points and 10 assists for Lyon County, who improved to 16-5 and clinched the No. 1 seed in the district with a 5-0 mark.
Hunter Reynolds led Trigg County with 13 points, and Landon Stewart and Luke Washer each scored 10 points.
Lyon County will play at Hopkinsville Thursday.
Trigg County’s game Saturday with Big Sandy, Tenn. was canceled. The Wildcats will play at Apollo Friday, but Coach Mason Burgett said he is looking to add a game on Monday or Tuesday.
