Carlisle County Delivers Late Gut Punch to Wildcats

1-29-stewart

For the second straight year, Carlisle County delivered a last-second gut punch to Trigg County. The Comets scored six points in the final 13 seconds of the game to stun the Wildcats 67-65 Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Gym.

A Hunter Reynolds free throw with 20 seconds left gave Trigg a 65-61 lead. Carlisle’s Hunter Arnold drove the lane, scored, and was fouled. His free throw made it a one-point game.

Two missed free throws gave Carlisle the ball back. With Trigg backing its players off the free throw line, the Comets grabbed the miss and advanced unabated down the court where Zack Grogan drove the lane, made the bucket, and was fouled with five seconds left.

Grogan missed the free throw but Kylen King grabbed the miss and was fouled. He hit the first but missed the second. Out of time outs, Trigg’s Jhaden Vaughn grabbed the rebound but missed a three-quarter court shot for the win.

Trigg County missed five free throws in the fourth quarter and was just 14-of-29 from the charity stripe for the game. Conversely, Carlisle County knocked down 15-of-19.

It was the second straight game that Trigg County lost after having a lead late. The Wildcats dropped an overtime game at Apollo Friday night.

Last year, Isiah Keeling’s first 3-pointer of the year came at the horn to give Carlisle County a 52-49 win over the Wildcats.

Carter Burnett scored 11 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter to help spark the Comets’ comeback.

Vaughn scored 21 points to pace the Wildcats and Landon Stewart added 16 points.

Trigg County will try and snap a season-long five-game losing streak Tuesday when they host Livingston Central. A Trigg County win makes them the No. 3 seed in the district tournament while a loss will mean a coin toss will decide the seed.
