The Hopkins County Central Storm defeated the Caldwell County Tigers 72-51 in 7th District basketball action Monday night in Mortons Gap.

Caldwell was already locked into the No. 3 seed for the district tournament in two weeks. But the win gives Hopkins Central a chance to play for the No. 1 seed when it hosts Madisonville-North Hopkins on Thursday.

However, the big story from Monday’s game was a second-quarter altercation that ultimately resulted in 12 Hopkins Central players being disqualified from the contest.

The Storm’s Trevor Weldon and Caldwell’s Luke Parker were each ejected for fighting. Eleven others from Hopkins Central were removed from the game for leaving the bench area while the incident was in progress.

That meant the Storm had to finish the last minute and a half of the first half and the entire second half with just four eligible players.

(More suspensions could be possible after the Kentucky High School Athletic Association reviews video of the fracas.)

The Storm (12-12 overall, 4-1 district) got to halftime with a 31-25 lead, then continued to extend the margin in the second half despite playing a man down.

The four players on the court in the second half combined for 68 of Hopkins Central’s 72 points in the contest.

Drake Skeen had a game-high 24 points. Trevahn Jones had 17, Davonyae Butcher scored 15 and Namari Hall added 12.

Caldwell (4-17, 1-5) had three players score in double figures. Collin Whittington had 14 points, Jaydarius Wilson 12 and Carter Whittington 10.

The Storm has won the last three matchups with Caldwell. Hopkins Central leads the all-time series 30-27.

The Storm won 67-51 earlier in Princeton.

Caldwell will play its fourth game in five days when it visits Trigg County on Tuesday as part of a girls and boys doubleheader.

Hopkins Central next hosts Livingston Central on Tuesday for a girls/boys varsity twinbill.
