Down two points to Trigg County at halftime, the Madisonville Maroons made a renewed effort to reacquaint themselves with the paint. And like a Bob Ross masterpiece, the paint blazed a happy trail to an 81-56 win over the Wildcats Tuesday in Cadiz.

Madisonville hit 15-of-19 shots in the decisive third quarter and outscored Trigg 35-16 to turn a 29-27 halftime deficit into a 63-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

26 of Madisonville’s 36 third quarter points came in the paint, sparked by DeAaron Watkins. The freshman was scoreless in the first half, saddled by early foul trouble that saw him play just three minutes.

He was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in the third quarter and 2-of-2 at the free throw line, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Madisonville scored 58 points in the paint compared to 18 for Trigg.

Trigg County hit just 4-of-14 shots in the third quarter and turned the basketball over five times, leading to 11 Madisonville points.

Trigg would get no closer than 16 points in the final quarter as Madisonville pushed its advantage to 27 points late in the game.

The Maroons commanded the class, outrebounding Trigg 41-21. The Maroons grabbed 18 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. But it was their pressure defense that forced 22 turnovers that they flipped into 31 points.

Marcus Eaves joined Watkins with 16 points. Destin Cheirs added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Maroons got a boost from its bench that scored 34 points, led by Tre Carney’s 16 points.

Jhaden Vaughn was able to keep Trigg County close in the first half. His aggressive pursuit of the basket saw him get to the free throw line 12 times, making all 12 shots.

He set a school record with his 18-for-22 performance at the charity stripe. Scott Sivills (1987), Chris Sparks (1997), and Anthony Mayes (1997) each hit 17 free throws, while Sivills had the attempts record with 21.

Vaughn was able to get to the free throw line one final time with 1:59 left when Madisonville was assessed a technical foul for a player having the wrong jersey number in the book.

Vaughn’s free throw acremen was part of a 24-point, 11-rebound night. Tutu Gude added 11 points for the Wildcats, who dropped their seventh straight game to Madisonville.

Trigg County will close out the regular season Thursday against Ballard Memorial at Wildcat Gym.
