Lyon County Makes History With Fifth Straight District Title

2-24-nelson

The Lyon County Lyons made district history Friday and got to show off their new toy in claiming the 5th District championship at Livingston Central.

Bradin Nelson, who just became eligible for the Lyons on Wednesday, scored 13 points in his season debut as Lyon County beat Trigg County 88-47. Lyon County won its fifth straight district title becoming the first school in the 5th District to accomplish the feat.

The KHSAA denied Nelson’s eligibility after his move from Webster County last year. He became eligible this week after sitting out the regular season. The newest Lyon received a standing ovation from the home fans during starting lineups and when he exited the game in the fourth quarter. In between, Nelson added nine assists and seven rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

Like most of the season, the Lyons started quickly as Nelson and Brady Shoulders combined to score Lyon’s first 15 points in a 15-5 run. Lyon exploited seven first half turnovers by Trigg into eight points and led 25-11 after one quarter.

Lyon stretched its lead to as many as 24 points in the second quarter and led 47-25 at halftime.

The Lyons shot 51-percent from the field and outrebounded Trigg 30-22. They also held a 36-22 advantage in the paint over the Wildcats.

Jack Reddick, who missed several games with a foot injury, hit five 3-pointers and finished with 22 points. Travis Perry scored 20 points and had five steals.

Ten players scored for Trigg County but Landon Stewart was the only Wildcat in double figures with 11 points. Tutu Gude added nine points. Jhaden Vaughn, Trigg’s leading scorer, was limited to five points on five shots.

Lyon County won four straight district titles from 1999-2002. Trigg County won four straight from 2013-16, and Livingston Central won four straight from 1977-80. This year’s Lyon County team is the first to win five straight in the 5th District.

The 41-point margin is the largest in a district championship game since Trigg County’s 104-56 win over Livingston Central in 1995. It was also the largest margin of defeat by Trigg in any district tournament game.

Both teams will advance to next week’s region tournament which begins Wednesday at Madisonville.
