First Half Dry Spell Does in Lady Warriors at KCAA Super Regional

A long first half scoring drought turned out to be the undoing for the Heritage Christian Academy Lady Warriors Saturday afternoon. The Lady Warriors went more than nine minutes without a point over the end of the first quarter and most of the second quarter as they fell 34-27 to AIE in the semifinals of the KCAA Super Regional at Oak Ridge Christian Academy.

The Lady Warriors were leading 9-4 late in the first quarter when the lid dropped on the basket. HCA would still only trail 10-9 when the quarter ended. If only the dry spell had ended with the quarter.

However, the drought continued as the Lady Warriors did not score again until 22 seconds were left in the opening half. A big factor in the dry spell was foul trouble that plagued HCA. And, specifically, it was the foul situation for Liana Carr that really seemed to derail the offense in the second quarter as she spent most of the quarter on the bench.

The 2-3 zone played by AIE also posed issues for the Lady Warriors, as they struggled outside to get shots to fall and could not find many seams to get down into the paint.

Still, the Lady Warriors trailed only 15-11 at the half.

But scoring was still an issue for HCA as the third quarter got rolling. The Lady Warriors would connect on only two field goals in the third as AIE was able to nudge the lead on out to 24-18 heading into the final eight minutes of the game. Both of the Lady Warrior field goals in the quarter came from senior Hallie Zieg.

That would be about as close as HCA could get coming down the stretch of the game. As AIE’s defense was able to fend off any comeback attempt from the Lady Warriors in the final quarter. Hallie Zieg, Liana Carr, and Kate St. Martin would all end up fouling out of the game in the final quarter for HCA.

Hallie Zieg and Bailey Craft each had 12 points to lead Heritage Christian. Zieg had 10 rebounds while Craft had 7 for the Lady Warriors.

Kenzlee Willliams was the leading scorer for AIE with 13 points. Hayden Lawson finished with 8 points.
