Madisonville-North Hopkins outscored Hopkins County Central 27-7 over the final 6 minutes to turn a four-point game into a 73-49 victory Friday night in the finals of the 7th District tournament in Mortons Gap.

What had been an evenly-contested game for much of the night turned into the 24-point Madisonville win as the Maroons captured the district championship for the 14th straight year.

Marcus Eaves, who starred at Hopkins Central last year before transferring to Madisonville, had a game-high 26 points to lead the Maroons, who are now 22-9.

Hopkins Central (14-17) was within 27-25 at halftime and twice took one-point leads early in the third quarter.

Madisonville led 42-36 through three periods, but the Storm was still as close as 46-42 with still 6 minutes to play.

However, the Maroons finished the game strong to put away another district title.

DeAaron Watkins added 16 points for Madisonville.

For the Storm, Trevor Weldon, Namari Hall and Drake Skeen each had 11 points. Trevahn Jones added 10.

Both teams will play in the 2nd Region tournament next week at Madisonville-North Hopkins.
