If the defending 2nd Region champions were trying to send a message Wednesday night, it’s that they can put up a whole lot of points.

Lyon County posted 35 points in the opening quarter and went on to beat Hopkins County Central 109-75 in quarterfinal action at Madisonville-North Hopkins.

The Lyons will face Christian County in Monday’s semifinals after putting up the second-most points ever in a 2nd Region tournament game in the win over the Storm.

Only Christian, in a 112-56 win over Crittenden County in the first round in 1975, has scored more.

Lyon (28-5) never trailed against a Hopkins County Central team that tried to stay in the game from long range.

The Storm (14-18) connected on 15 of 37 3-pointers for 40.5 percent, but it still wasn’t enough to put a scare into the Lyons.

Lyon’s “Big Three” put up large numbers as well.

Travis Perry had 32 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. He is now just 94 points behind King Kelly Coleman in pursuit of the state’s all-time scoring mark of 4,337 points. Perry was 10 of 19 from the floor and made all nine of his free throw attempts.

Jack Reddick was 12 of 17 from the field and totaled 29 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Brady Shoulders had a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds along with five assists and four steals. Many of Shoulders’ points came on a myriad of dunks in the contest.

Lyon shot 58.3 percent from the field, making 42 of 72 attempts.

The Lyons outrebounded Hopkins Central 44-23.

Points in the paint favored Lyon by a large margin, 68-18.

For the Storm, Drake Skeen was 7 of 13 from behind the arc and finished with 26 pints. Trevahn Jones had 15 points while Namari Hall had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Hopkins Central was still within 14-11 in the first quarter before Lyon opened up a 35-19 lead after 8 minutes.

The Lyons took a 50-32 lead to halftime, then extended the margin to 76-55 through three quarters.

Lyon led by as much as 39 points late in the contest.

University Heights Academy was the last team to hit the century mark in a 2nd Region tournament game, beating Hopkins Central 104-74 in the first round in 2018.

Lyon last reached triple digits in the regional tournament in a 100-94 overtime win against Hopkinsville in the 1991 semifinals.
