With the official start of the 2023 baseball season now less than two weeks away, scrimmage activity is starting to pick up across the area. Hopkinsville hosted Trigg County Tuesday evening in a preseason get-together.

The two teams were able to get six innings in before the time limit for the scrimmage took effect. Hopkinsville won the scrimmage 19-3, several of the runs were scored after the JV players entered late in the contest for both teams.

The story for Hopkinsville may well have been the performance of J.J. Thompson, who transferred in from Heritage Christian. Thompson went three innings on the mound, striking out six and giving up no hits. Thompson also wielded a big bat with a triple and a grand slam.

Lucas Kaetzel gave the Tigers two solid innings on the mound, striking out three.

At the plate, Zach Moss was 2-3 with a double. Gavin Powell, Dylan Sweeney, Lucas Kaetzel, and Andrew Mayes contributed to the Hoptown offense.
All had hits as well.

For Trigg County, senior Matthew Leeper had a double at the plate. Leeper also saw time on the mound for the Wildcats. Coach Taylor Follis pointed to the plate performances from Chase Hampton and Kaiden McCormick.

Aaron Despain got the start for Trigg and worked two innings. The Wildcats also got mound work from Haydon Reynolds.

Hopkinsville is set to open the season March 13 against Clarksville Northeast.

Trigg County will get things rolling March 13 hosting Hopkins Central.
