Crittenden Girls Rocket Into Regional Championship Game

Crittenden County’s girls are in the 2nd Region championship game for the first time since winning the whole thing in 2011.

The Lady Rockets avenged a late-season loss in Saturday’s semifinal round, using a workmanlike approach to dismiss Hopkins County Central 57-39 at Union County High School.

Crittenden will face Henderson County in Sunday’s 3 p.m. title tilt. Henderson routed Christian County 66-33 in Saturday’s other semifinal matchup.

The Lady Storm (24-9) led early and took an 11-10 advantage to the second quarter.

But the Lady Rockets, who fell 76-68 at Hopkins Central on Feb. 14, turned things around in the second period.

As the Lady Storm (24-9) struggled offensively, Crittenden grabbed the upper hand and went to halftime with a 27-21 advantage. Natalie Boone’s long 3-pointer at the horn gave the Lady Rockets their six-point edge at the break.

Crittenden quickly extended its lead to double digits at 33-23 after halftime and held Hopkins Central to just five points in the third quarter.

A 3-pointer from the corner by Elliot Evans with just 6 seconds remaining in the stanza sent the Lady Rockets to the final period with a 40-26 lead.

Hopkins Central could not recover.

Crittenden’s lead hit 20 points at 48-28 on a layup by Anna Boone with 4:21 to play.

The Lady Rockets took their biggest lead of the night at 55-32 following a three-point play by Taylor Guess with 2:03 left.

Guess finished with a game-high 23 points to push Crittenden into the regional championship game. Anna Boone added 14 points and Natalie Boone had 11.

Mercy Sutton led Hopkins Central with 11 points while Brooklyn Clark had 10.

The Lady Rockets were the aggressors most of the game and it showed up at the free throw line. Crittenden got to the stripe 21 times and connected on 17 for 81 percent. Hopkins Central missed all three of its free throw attempts.

At 25-5, the Lady Rockets have tied the 2016-17 Crittenden squad for most wins in a season.

Crittenden will be playing in the 2nd Region championship for just the third time ever on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Henderson has won the last four regional titles while taking the big trophy nine of the last 10 years.
