For the Lyon County Lyons to reach the semifinals of the 2023 UK HealthCare Boys Sweet 16 they will have to dethrone the defending state champions Friday night in the quarterfinals. Lyon County and George Rogers Clark (Clark County, if you prefer) will square off for the right to advance to the final day of the season.

Both teams have outstanding records. The Lyons come in at 31-5 while the Cardinals enter the game at 28-5.

The Lyons have won 17 straight games, including Thursday’s Sweet 16 win over Newport. GRC has won ten in a row and 21 of their last 22, including a 62-54 handling of North Laurel in the opening round Thursday night.

Lyon County entered the Sweet 16 averaging nearly 82 points a game, while the Cardinals are averaging nearly 76 a contest.

The Lyons have three players, Travis Perry, Brady Shoulders, and Jack Reddick, averaging more than 18 points a game. GRC has four players averaging double-figures, Jerone Morton, Trent Edwards, Sam Parrish, and Reshaun Hampton.

The Cardinals shoot better from inside the arc. The Lyons shoot better from behind the line. Both teams are good at the free-throw line. Lyon County also averages just over 2 rebounds a game more than does George Rogers Clark.

GRC’s only losses in state came to Great Crossing, LaRue County, and Frederick Douglass. The Lyons lost to Great Crossing but routed LaRue County.

George Rogers Clark has an RPI of .66890, while Lyon County’s RPI comes in at .66544.

There figures to be a large crowd in attendance for the game as a large chunk of Lyon County will be in Lexington looking for their team to make more history. GRC figures to have big support as they look to earn the chance to repeat on Saturday.

Oh, and by the way, Lyon County now has the state’s all-team leading scorer.

Buckle up, a trip to the final four is on the line as Lyon County and George Rogers Clark square off. Tipoff 8:30 eastern time at Rupp Arena.

  1. Go Lyons. I had two boys play for the Lyons and still my heart remains in Eddyville. Great school.
