Kady Fuller hit the first home run of her high school career Monday at Graves County.

After being held to just five runs in its first four games of the 2023 season, the Trigg County High School softball team busted out the bats in a big way Monday and turned away host Graves County with a 13-8 victory in Mayfield.

The Wildcats, who trailed 5-0 after three innings and 7-4 after five innings, hit for the collective cycle during a furious comeback. Down a run and heading into the final inning, Trigg quickly tied things up when Emma West and Brynlee Smock smacked consecutive doubles to start the top of the frame. The seventh-inning onslaught continued when Veyda Grinols gave her squad the lead for good with a two-run single to left that put Trigg County ahead 9-7.

Grinols turned out to be one of four straight ‘Cats to record an RBI. She was followed by Maddie Smith (RBI single), Rylee Hendricks (groundout), and Kady Fuller (two-out, two-run home run) to make it 13-7. The Eagles’ Ellie Davis did manage to drop a two-out RBI single into right to make it 13-8. But, with the bases loaded, Tember Oliver (2-0) got out of the jam by getting Isabella Prather to pop out to end the slugfest.

One of 11 Wildcats to record a hit, Grinols was also one of four to have a multi-hit performance. She and Kiley Slone, hitting at the bottom of the order, combined to go 4-for-7 with four runs scored. Hendricks roped a triple to start the fourth inning and later scored on one of five Graves errors. Trigg had seven miscues of its own, but more than made up for it at the dish. The aforementioned blast by eighth-grader Fuller was the first of her career and the first this season by a Wildcat.

Graves County (1-3) was led by Davis, who went 3-for-5 with a game-high five RBI. Brooklyn Cole (2-for-4, three runs) and Layla McDowell (2-for-4, two runs) also had strong performances despite the defeat. The Eagles had three doubles.

Oliver earned the win after yielding just one walk, scattering five hits, and allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings of relief. Avery Wade, who started the game for TCHS, walked none, struck out four, and gave up five hits and five runs (two earned) in three innings. Anna Rogers did manage to strike out 13 for the Eagles but allowed 14 hits in the complete-game loss.

Trigg County (2-3) will be trying for its third win in four games when it travels to take on Webster County at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Trojans won their season opener 21-0 at McLean County on March 16 and hosted Dawson Springs on Monday.
