Caldwell County High School football head coach Will Barnes has informed the team he will not return as Tiger head coach.

A search for his replacement will begin immediately.

The school announced the news on Wednesday.

Will Barnes played quarterback for his father, David Barnes, for three seasons at Caldwell. The younger Barnes held nearly every Caldwell passing record when he graduated from CCHS in 2009.

After playing quarterback at Kentucky Wesleyan, Barnes was an assistant coach at Glasgow High School from 2014-17. He was offensive coordinator at that school from 2015-17.

Barnes returned to his alma mater for the 2017 football season and was offensive coordinator through 2019. Over those three years, the Tigers averaged over 33 points and 312 yards of offense a contest.

His father won 110 games at Caldwell. However, David Barnes unexpectedly died in August of 2019, just six days before the regular season opener.

Waynee McGowan was the interim head coach in 2019, going 8-3.

Will Barnes took over the head coaching duties in 2020 and navigated the program through the Covid year, going 3-4.

Caldwell went 7-4 in 2021 before finishing 5-6 last season.
