Caldwell Errors Costly in 9-4 Setback at Marshall

Caldwell County played well for much of the contest, but a dropped pop-up in the bottom of the sixth inning led to five unearned runs for host Marshall County.

All told, the Marshals scored six times in the home half of the sixth to rally for a 9-4 victory Saturday in Draffenville in a game that was added to the schedule on Friday.

A three-run third inning had given Caldwell a 4-2 lead in the contest.

Carter Whittington tripled to open the inning and scored on an infield single by Luke Parker. Ari Wells and Collin Whittington had RBI hits with two outs to give the Tigers their two-run edge.

Caldwell (2-3) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single with two outs by Brady Holeman.

Marshall (4-3) scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to go up 2-1.

Of the Marshals’ nine runs, only one was earned because of four Caldwell errors.

The Tigers outhit the Marshals 7-6.

Reese Oakley went the distance on the mound to pick up the win for Marshall. He allowed seven base hits while striking out 13 and walking just one.

Cole Slone worked into the sixth inning for Caldwell, allowing just one earned run on two hits. He fanned nine and walked five.

Scott Cortner relieved in the sixth inning and was stuck with the loss despite not giving up an earned run.

Oakley was the only player in the game with more than one base hit, going 2-for-3 and knocking in two for Marshall.

Oakley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left in the fifth as the Marshals inched to within 4-3.

Marshall defeated Lyon County 6-5 prior to taking on Caldwell.

The Tigers will be on the road again on Monday when they visit Crittenden County.
