Count ESPN/SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic as a huge believer in Kentucky running back Ray Davis, a transfer from Vanderbilt being counted on to help offset the loss of Chris Rodriguez.

“Ray Davis is that dude. I loved him last year. I said then he was the most underrated player in the league,” Cubelic said. “He did not have a great OL (offensive line) at Vanderbilt but he was constantly churning out yards.

“He was always running through tackles, running through blockers, finding ways to find seams and open spaces. He is phenomenal and I am a big fan of his.”

Cubelic believes if the UK offensive line can just “take a small step” forward this year that “Ray Davis is someone who will make the run game take a giant step” for Kentucky because with the loss of Rodriguez someone needs to provide that production.

“I watched him a lot at Vanderbilt last year,” Cubelic said. “The kid is really good but he just did not have a ton of help. Vandy switched quarterbacks, did not have the best offensive line but he always found ways to get yards.

“He is not a home run hitter but he can grind out yards to help you win in the Southeastern Conference. He can get to  the perimeter and find holes. He’s just a great all-around back that just be a great fit with (offensive coordinator) Liam Coen.”

Cubelic said Davis’ hard-nosed attitude will inspire younger teammates

“He’s a great running back and person but just because he was at Vanderbilt a lot of folks did not appreciate what he did,” Cubelic said. “But I think Kentucky fans are going to like him and like him a lot.”

  1. If you watched him when we played Vandy you know he is good. He has great vision and is a very explosive runner. You would think he must be six foot by 230 pounds by his results.
He reminds you of Rodriquez in the way he overpowers tacklers and keeps truckin’.

  2. Ray Davis, Devin Leary, Dane, Key, etc., none of that matters if the Big blue Wall isn’t rebuilt.
