Caldwell County overcame a 7-3 deficit late and defeated Hickman County 8-7 in nine innings Thursday night.

That completed a sweep of two games in the Mustang Invitational at McCracken County for the Tigers, who beat Calloway County 5-2 earlier in the day.

A sacrifice fly to center by Collin Whittington finally ended the game against Hickman after Caldwell had loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Carter Whittington and Hunter Newsom each had RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth inning as Caldwell scored three times to get within 7-6.

Down a run in the bottom of the seventh, Jamus Carneyhan walked with one out and stole second. He then came in on a single to center by Ari Wells to tie the game and set up extra innings.

Cody Pruitt was the winning pitcher for Caldwell. He went the final 2.1 innings, blanking the Falcons on three base hits.

Newsom went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Wells was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run batted in.

Carneyhan and Luke Parker were each 2-for-4. Brady Holeman was 2-for-5 and drove in a run.

Caldwell never led in the contest until the ninth inning. The game was tied 1-1, 3-3 and 7-7.

The Tigers are 3-0 all-time against Hickman County.

Caldwell is now 7-4 this season while the Falcons are 4-6.

Earlier in the day, Cole Slone blanked Calloway County over the final six innings as the Tigers beat the Lakers 5-2.

Down 2-0 early, the Tigers got one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth to take the lead. Wells drove home the fourth-inning runs with a single to right to give Caldwell a 3-2 advantage.

A Ben Goodaker grounder to short in the sixth made it 4-2.

Holeman drove in a run in the top of the seventh with a groundout to second to put the Tigers up 5-2.

Slone was 2-for-3 offensively for Caldwell.

On the mound, Slone surrendered two earned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked one in the complete-game effort.

Calloway fell to 4-6 with the setback.

It was Caldwell’s second win over Calloway in six days. The Tigers won 6-5 in Princeton on Saturday.

Caldwell has won its last four matchups against Calloway, but the Lakers still lead all-time 10-9.

With its two wins on Thursday, Caldwell has won five of its last six games.

The Tigers will next play in the 2nd Region All A Classic next week. The Tigers are scheduled to play at Lyon County on Monday in a quarterfinal round matchup in that event.
