After a scorching spring break trip that included seven victories in seven games during the Cal Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the Union County High School softball team’s eight-game winning streak was brought to a halt Monday in a 5-1 loss to Christian County.
The Colonels, who went 2-1 during a spring break event of their own at Butler County, got a run and RBI from Kaleigh Shaw, a key pinch-hit double from Alyson Grant, and continued to be the benefactor of strong pitching from Gracie Harned to keep the host Bravettes at bay.
For the second game in a row, Harned (5-2) allowed just one run and went the distance to earn the pitching victory for the fifth time in eight starts. She struck out five, scattered just three hits, walked two, and allowed the lone run on Ava Arnett’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
Playing its sixth straight game on the road, Christian County took an early 1-0 lead on Shaw’s RBI single in the first, then went ahead for good on Karlee Crick’s RBI line-drive single in the second that brought home Jada Miller. Entering as a pinch hitter, Grant proceeded to make it 4-1 in the fifth with a two-run double. Avery Adcock finished 2-for-4, including her team-best third triple of 2023.
Two of Union County’s three hits — all singles — came from freshman leadoff hitter Audrey Staley. Arnett had the other on the aforementioned RBI single that tied the game at 1-all in the first inning. Cadence Coker (8-3) suffered just her third loss in 10 starts this season, striking out five, walking three and allowing six hits. Peyton Jenkins was solid in relief, striking out two in two innings.
The Colonels (7-4) are scheduled to play the Bravettes (10-6) again May 9 during Christian County’s regular-season finale. In the meantime, the Cols are back in action Tuesday at McCracken County. The Mustangs (11-2) have lost their last two games but are unbeaten (7-0) against in-state opponents this season.
