Caldwell County’s hopes of a trip to the All A Classic state tournament fell one game short.

The Tigers were defeated at Paducah St. Mary 6-1 Monday night in sectional action.

A four-run sixth inning allowed the homestanding Vikings to bust up what had been a pitchers’ duel and earn a trip to the All A state tourney this weekend in Campbellsville.

St. Mary senior right-hander Luke Heath and Caldwell senior righty Ben Goodaker made things miserable on the hitters most of the day.

St. Mary (12-3-1) used a leadoff single fgrom Brett Haas and a one-out double from Landon Durbin to take a 1-0 lead. But Goodaker retired the next 10 batters he faced.

Caldwell (12-8) scratched out a run in the top of the fifth inning to draw even.

A one-out infield single by by Collin Whittington was followed by another single by Ben Goodaker. Cody Pruitt then bunted the runners to second and third.

A chopper up the middle by Carter Whittington went for an infield single and drove in a run to tie the game. But the Tigers left runners at first and third to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1.

A leadoff double by Avry Duncan helped the Vikings go back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Duncan was bunted to third, then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Zack Krueger.

St. Mary then sent eight men to the plate in the sixth inning while scoring four times. An error meant three of those runs were unearned, but the Vikings still led 6-1.

Heath retired the Tigers in order in the top of the seventh to finish off the complete-game victory.

Heath (5-0) allowed one earned run on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

Goodaker (6-2) allowed three earned runs on seven base hits. He struck out three but did not walk a batter.

Durbin was 2-for-3 and drove in two for St. Mary. Jackson Willett went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Caldwell returns to action on Tuesday with a 7th District date at Hopkins County Central.
