Logan County remained one of the hottest high school baseball teams in Kentucky on Monday behind a masterful performance by junior Chance Sweeney and 5-1 home win over Todd County Central.
Sweeney (4-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and eventually finished off the complete-game win by striking out a half-dozen Rebels, scattering three hits and allowing just one blemish — a two-out RBI double from Todd’s Zack Robinson in the sixth.
With team leads in K’s (30), innings pitched (41 2/3), and wins (4), Sweeney continued to be his team’s ace on the mound. Monday’s gem was also a significant bounceback following Sweeney’s 6-5 loss to Franklin-Simpson on April 24.
Isaac Stanley, who had a big night at the dish, gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single. He struck again with an RBI single in the third that gave LCHS a 3-0 lead they’d never relinquish. Logan (13-12) has won eight of its last nine games overall and will take on district foe Todd Central again Tuesday in Elkton.
TCCHS senior Preston Rager (1-4) pitched all six innings for his squad. He managed to strike out four Cougars but gave up seven hits, a pair of walks and four earned runs. Besides Robinson’s run-scoring double in the top of the sixth, the Rebels got singles from Devin Schutt and Conner Wheeler.
The Rebels (10-13), which have dropped two straight and seven of their last nine contests, will try to earn a regular-season split with Logan County on Tuesday evening. Todd Central is now 2-3 overall in 13th District play.
