Olivia Moore hit her second double of the season to drive in two runs, Lilly Perry pitched into the sixth inning, and the Lyon County High School softball team ended an eight-game winless drought Tuesday with a 7-5 victory at Calloway County.

The Lyons, who are in the midst of playing their final 10 regular-season games on the road, scored three times in the fifth inning and held off a final Laker rally to pick up their first W since April 25. Moore finished 2-for-4 and delivered a key two-RBI hit in the fourth inning to give her squad a 2-0 lead. LCHS would eventually win by two runs.

Perry (6-8) allowed a trio of doubles and five drawn walks by host Calloway, but managed to work 5 1/3 innings and grabbed the win by striking out three. Destiny Cayce allowed just two hits and gave up an unearned run in the final 1 2/3 innings of relief to give Lyon County a confidence-building decision as the regular season prepares to wrap.

After the Lyons went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Lakers knotted the contest at 3-all during the bottom half, when Carson McReynolds and Preslee Phillips hit crucial doubles. The RBI two-bagger by Phillips came with two outs and tied things up at the end of four innings.

LCHS would quickly respond, however, as Courtney Collins’ leadoff single in the fifth eventually turned into a run on Cayce’s one-out RBI hit to make it 4-3. Three batters later, one of two Calloway County errors led to two more runs to give Lyon County a three-run cushion.

The Lakers (12-13) went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but got within 7-4 on a two-out RBI single by Phillips in the sixth, and cut the Lyon lead to 7-5 in the seventh when a McReynolds ground ball led to a run-scoring error. With two outs, though, Cayce managed to strike out the potential tying run to end the contest. Calloway County has now lost three games in a row.

Perry (2-for-3, walk), Lauren Davis (2-for-5, RBI), and Jenna Coursey (1-for-3, run, RBI) all had key contributions for the visiting Lyons in the win. Lyon County banged 11 hits against the Laker pitching duo of Emerson Grogan and Hailee Jones. Grogan (10-9) allowed nine hits, two walks and seven runs (five earned) in five innings.

Lyon County (7-17) is scheduled to play Thursday at Hickman County and Friday at Todd County Central — both at 6 p.m. — to close out the 2023 regular season slate. The Rebels (18-13) won their fourth straight game Tuesday and already owns a 3-1 victory over the Lyons from April 28.
