When Taylor County junior offensive lineman Hayes Johnson verbally committed to Kentucky, the coaching staff told him it planned to “get the best person they could at quarterback” in his recruiting class.

Today Johnson thinks Kentucky did just that after Lexington Christian quarterback Cutter Boley announced he would sign with Kentucky in December and also reclassify to the 2024 recruiting class. He’s the top-rated player in Kentucky and a four-star quarterback nationally ranked near the top of his recruiting class who had narrowed his college choices to UK, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee.

“It’s awesome to start the 2024 class with three Kentucky boys (Simon Kenton offensive lineman Aba Selm has also committed),” Johnson said. “It’s awesome to have him. Just me being a Kentucky fan, it’s awesome. I have talked to Cutter off and on and I knew he really liked Kentucky.”

The 6-5, 208-pound Boley completed 254 of 400 passes for 3,901 yards and 36 touchdowns with 15 interceptions last season. He also ran for six touchdowns during LCA’s 9-5 season.

“I have been whispering a little bit (to Boley) about Kentucky. I have been all over the place talking to guys but I have definitely talked to Cutter,” Johnson said.

Boley’s father, Scott, played college basketball at Western Kentucky. He knew if his son was ready to make his decision, then this was the time to do it.

“If he stayed in the 2025 class this was about to go real crazy with even more schools coming in,” Boley said. “Bigger schools are notorious for waiting until the last minutes. Some schools have tried to come on strong lately but it was too little, too late. Some schools have been on him for so long that he feels more loyalty to them and Kentucky certainly was one of those schools.”

The return of offensive coordinator Liam Coen certainly factored into Boley’s decision because he already had a relationship with Coen when he left after the 2021 season to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams. But UK recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow has worked tireless hours also recruiting Boley and letting him know what a priority he was for the Wildcats.

  1. Great Grab for the Cats. Now, lets develop him and not let him get away in the portal. Get him some playing time. Get him ready for ’24. One can only hope that he takes to the coaching.
