Lady Falcons’ Encouraging Season Ends in Region Quarterfinals

After recording their most wins in a season since 2007 and returning to the 2nd-Region tournament for the first time in 17 years with an 11-0 win over Hopkinsville that snapped a nine-year losing streak in the series, the Fort Campbell softball team saw its campaign end on Thursday with a 15-0 loss to Henderson County.

The region’s highest-scoring team went down quietly in the 1st against Fort Campbell starting pitcher Kiley McCrary, but the Lady Colonels erupted for 11 runs in their second at-bat.

Henderson’s Alyse Rollings singled, and an error brought in three runs ahead of an RBI double by Anna Willett to make it 5-0. Then, Kendal Hargrove doubled in a pair of runs, and another Lady Falcon error allowed two more runs to score.

Anna Kemp went two innings in the circle with no hits, no walks, and 11 five strikeouts before giving way to Mackenzie Burczyk. Burczyk allowed the Lady Falcons’ only hit, a single by Alexsa Hoffman, and struck out two in an inning and two-thirds. Ava Eblen got the final out with a strikeout for the Lady Colonels.

Jersey Gardner hit an inside-the-park home run that made it 14-0 in the 3rd, and Fort Campbell’s seventh error of the game allowed the final run to score with two outs in the bottom of the 4th.

Kiley McCrary took the loss for Fort Campbell, allowing seven runs, six earned, on three hits with three walks and a strikeout over one and a third before exiting with a finger injury. Carrie McCrary went the rest of the way, giving up eight runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Hallie McCracken finished with three RBI for the Lady Colonels, Burczyk was two for two at the plate, and Rollings, Hargrove, and Gardner each drove in two runs.

Fort Campbell ends the season with a 7-15 record. Henderson improved to 28-5 with its 16th win in 17 tries and will face the winner of Madisonville-North Hopkins and Lyon County.
