For the third year in a row, the Lyon County Lyons are in the 2nd Region baseball semifinals. The Lyons got home runs from John Bingham and Eli Baker and a complete game from starting pitcher Brady Belt as they took a 7-2 win over University Heights Saturday afternoon at Christian County High School.

Belt gave up just four hits over his seven innings of work and threw just 96 pitches in the contest.

Lyon County got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when John Bingham belted a solo shot to dead center to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead. The inning almost turned into a big two-out rally as Peyton Williams followed Bingham’s blast with a single to left. A pair of walks later, the Lyons had the bases loaded. But Ian Tyler was able to get a strikeout to avoid any further damage and end the inning.

The Lyons were back on the board in the bottom of the second when Austin Spears singled with two outs. Spears advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a single from Eli Baker to make it a 2-0 Lyon County lead.

Lyon County added another single tally in the third inning when Aiden Waters singled with one out. Waters advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt and then scored on a single from Brady Belt to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Blazers got their first runs in the top of the 4th inning. After a walk, single, and a Lyon County error loaded the bases, Ian Tyler singled to score Ben Stone and cut the lead to 3-1. Gavin LaRonge followed Tyler’s hit with a sac fly to center and suddenly the Blazers were down just 3-2.

Lyon County continued the run-an-inning theme in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff double from Austin Spears and a two-out walk to Peyton Williams, Spears scored on an errant pickoff throw to third to make it 4-2.

With his pitch count climbing, UHA’s Ian Tyler was lifted as the game entered the bottom of the 5th inning and Lyon County quickly took advantage of the Blazer starter exiting the game. Peyton Carney led off the inning with a walk. After he was sacrificed to second, Austin Spears connected with an RBI triple to make it 5-2. Eli Baker then left the yard to left field with a towering shot to run the lead out to 7-2 after five.

From there, the Lyons left it in the hands of Belt, who allowed only a walk and a single over the final two innings of the game.

Austin Spears had a big game for the Lyons at the plate going 3-4 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Aiden Waters was 3-3 with a triple. Eli Baker ended up 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored.

Brady Belt ended the game on the mound with five strikeouts and two walks. Of the two runs scored by UHA, one was earned.

Ben Stone was 2-2 for the Blazers with a run scored. Jackson Flynn ended up 1-3 with a run scored. Ian Tyler went 1-3 with an RBI.

Ian Tyler was charged with the loss for UHA. He pitched four innings, giving up four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits, striking out six and walking three.

UHA finishes the 2023 season with a record of 15-11.

Lyon County improves to 21-9 and advances to Monday’s semifinals at Henderson County High School.
