Hosts Henderson County got a strong effort on the mound from Brennan Cates and used a three-run first inning to hold off Caldwell County 4-1 in Saturday’s 2nd-Region quarterfinal matchup.

The Tigers had their chances, leaving nine runners in scoring position despite only collecting two hits, but saw their season end with a record of 19-12.

Henderson’s Dru Meadows singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and stole second and third before coming home on a ground out.  After a pair of walks, Bryce Hayden delivered a two-out, two-run double to give Cates all the support he would need on the mound.

The Tigers got their lone run in the top of the 3rd when Carter Whittington crossed the plate on a Henderson error. However, Caldwell left the bases loaded in the top of the 4th and stranded runners on third in three innings.

Ben Goodaker took the loss despite six solid innings.  The senior righty gave up three earned runs on seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Cates got the win, allowing an unearned run on a single hit with seven walks and five strikeouts.  Reed Rheinhardt worked two scoreless frames, walking one with a hit and five strikeouts.

Cates also led the way at the plate with two hits, Hayden drove in two runs, and four other Colonels had a hit.

Henderson improved to 16-17 and will face Lyon County on Monday in the semifinals.  The Lyons won the regular season meeting between the teams 5-2.
