Caldwell junior Ryan Hammett faced a stiff challenge in his opening round singles matchup Tuesday at the 2023 KHSAA Tennis State Championships presented by UK HealthCare.
Hammett drew freshman Samuel Gurevich of North Oldham, who was one of the top eight seeds in the event.
Hammett played well, but couldn’t take a game from Gurevich, who captured a 6-0, 6-0 decision at Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville.
Gurevich, the 8th Region champion, went on to win his next match 6-0, 6-1 to reach the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Hammett finishes his junior season as 2nd Region champion and with a record of 20-2.
